Olga goose candle workshop & exhibition

Olga goosecandle exhibition/workshop

Hello everyone! I’m back in Tokyo after a work trip to New York. I have so many pending blog posts, it is almost impossible to blog in real time these days. But I will try my best to catch up! Here are some pictures that I’ve been wanting to share with you. Last month, I visited the Olga goosecandle exhibition in Rocket gallery and also attended their candle workshop. I’m in love with the unique style, shapes and colors of these candles!

Candle workshop
This might be one of the best workshops I’ve ever attended. It was my first time working with candles and it was so much fun! We decorated a pair of unicorns with soft kneadable wax and candle paints. I am really loving this new medium and can’t wait to try making some new shapes!

Hope

Picture taken on April 2011 – first bloom after the quake

2 years have past since the 3/11 disaster that took lives and destroyed homes of many in the Tohoku region. Even though the earthquake felt in Tokyo was nothing compared to what happened in Tohoku, I must admit that until today, I’m still deeply affected by the experience. I can only imagine how much harder it must be for those in Tohoku. I would like to take a moment to remember and send my thoughts to the victims of the disaster. I hope this will remind us how precious life is and that we should treasure every moment that we have with our loved ones, on this beautiful planet. Be strong and have hope.

Frankie Issue 51

frankie1

A few months ago, I was invited to contribute some DIY gift ideas for an upcoming Frankie magazine holiday spread. The theme was to create an easy to make gift with recycled materials that you can give to a friend during the holiday season. This was what I created – African basket inspired mini vases made with PET bottles and paper twines.

The spread turned out really lovely and I was very thrilled to have my project shot by amazing photographer Hilary Walker. I am so honored to be involved in this beautiful issue! If you haven’t gotten your copy yet, you can get yours from Frankie Press online store.

‘Being Together’ by John Clang

Awhile ago we were invited to participate in photographer John Clang’s ‘Being Together’ project. John Clang is an acclaimed New york-based Singaporean photographer and visual artist. This project draws from John’s personal experience of being separated from his family, and addresses the predicament that is being faced by many Singaporeans who have moved out of Singapore. Together with his team, he visited families in Singapore and abroad, in cities such as London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo to photograph a Family portrait for them with the help of modern technology – Skype.

John visited me at my tiny Tokyo apartment and projected my ‘family’ on my wall while we did a video chat on Skype. It was very surreal to have a mini family gathering in my living room in Tokyo when they were not physically there. My sister happened to be visiting Tokyo during that time so she was with me during the photo shoot. I am glad she was there to lighten the mood and make the photo shoot more fun than emotional. John suggested that we include my works in the portrait and I like how it reveals a part of my life in Tokyo. All in all, it was a very unique and precious experience for us especially since I’ve lived away from my family for about 8 years now. I really appreciate the opportunity to have a family portrait taken together even when we are not in the same country.

‘Being Together: Family & Portraits – Photographing with John Clang’ exhibition starts tomorrow at the National Museum of Singapore. Do drop by this meaningful exhibition if you are in Singapore! You can find more information about the exhibition here.

This project was also featured in the New York Times. You can see the online article here.
P.S. we are on page 3!

Here are some ‘behind the scenes’ pictures from our family portrait photo shoot.
